October - La nuit blanche

Considering a visit to Paris? You won't do much better than the first weekend in October. The city is buzzing, the weather is still mild, and, most of all, the great La nuit blanche takes place overnight on the first Saturday of the month.

Possibly the world's greatest one-night-only arts festival, La nuit blanche (literally "the white night", or more loosely "the all-nighter") brings the arts to everyone in the city. Entirely free, more than a million visitors wander the streets all night visiting events, exhibitions and installations in galleries, museums, libraries, hospitals, universities and all manner of public buildings. A particular favourite was the huge congregation of classical music students jamming on techno covers and Springsteen classics by the banks of the Seine.

Bring a bottle with you for some discreet glasses of wine as you meander through the streets, and, if you make it through the night you can even finish up in the Louvre (without the booze) in the morning for their free-entry day on the first Sunday of the month!
